Wherever you go, there you are.
Listen carefully to the one who speaks most often of betrayal.
Listen to the one who tells you, even on first meeting, that they have been deceived by everybody who came before you. That their last partner was a liar. That their business associate stole from them. That their family turned against them. That the friend of twenty years revealed themselves at last to be exactly what the others had been. Listen to the length of the list, and to how readily it is produced. There is something being told to you here, and it is not what you are being asked to hear.
The one who speaks constantly of being betrayed, the one who is endlessly alert to deception, the one who carries a detailed and well maintained record of their own wounds. This is not coincidence, it is the mind describing the only landscape it has ever inhabited. Accusation is the confession.
Every person navigates by an inner map, drawn from what they know of themselves. When you consider what another person might do in any given situation, you consult your map. You imagine their motives and incentives using the only material available to you, which is already held within your own interior.
This is why the honest person is so frequently taken in. They recognise, empathise and sympathise with the someone who hurts – the victim that needs consoling, comforting, reassuring and protecting. They cannot readily picture the circumstances another experienced because they have never built it, and there is nothing in their own depths from which to construct that type of persecuted world. They are still innocent, maybe even naive that they can offer something in return. But, they are not battle hardened, ready from Day One to take on an enemy that has not yet revealed itself, but has gained readiness from all the wars already fought.
Now watch how the pattern completes itself, because this is where it becomes tragic rather than merely unpleasant.
Believing that no one can be trusted, they are not a ‘victim of circumstance’ that places them in a single event in which they are unfortunately involved, instead they have become a self created victim that authors their own script of events that has been learnt, memorised, and acted out each time they climb onto the stage. This is an internalised world that animates the movie into the real world.
They withhold a portion of themselves in reserve, always. They gather information about others and hold it for the moment it may be required. Then they test what they have created. They need to strike first, because they are certain a strike is coming towards them. An accusation, an implication, a statement that questions motives. It is laying down the foundation of the very structure that defines their expectations, but not towards those in the past – but now fully directed and focused on the next offender. This is the next one to be fully tested against their world of hurt. They are certain that this new person will now do the same, because they have let them into their world and this is what is expected within. The statements that accuse, that question, that demand, are lies created to preserve their own position. Nothing has changed. Nothing has happened that required that they be asked. It might be the silence of noise, that things are going well, other feelings are growing – but that all raises suspicion and needs to be examined and scrutinised.
And that is when people leave.
Of course they leave. They are being handled rather than becoming known, watched rather than being met where they are. They may not be able to explain what feels wrong, to provide acceptable reasons why, only that something in the exchange never quite settles. Trust was not extended to them, so trust does not grow in them either, so eventually they withdraw. Sometimes they withdraw badly, and behave poorly on the way out, which is of course, is duly recorded, stored. The list grows longer. The evidence mounts. And the belief is confirmed once more: everyone lets you down in the end. Another one they knew they shouldn’t have trusted – but they never did.
They have not discovered a truth about humanity. They have manufactured a result and then continue to read it back as proof. Each new relationship is entered with the outcome already prepared, and each one obediently produces it. The prophecy does not merely predict. It constructs their world repeatedly.
In time they become the very thing they most loudly warn against. They become the untrustworthy one in someone else’s story, the betrayal that another will speak of years later to a stranger. They have created in others the precise pattern they cannot stop describing, and they will never once recognise their own hand in it. That is the whole cruelty of it. The one thing this pattern cannot afford is the moment of self-recognition, and so it is defended more fiercely than anything else the person holds.
Now, a necessary discernment, because this teaching becomes a weapon in careless hands. It cannot be held up as a mirror to say that everyone creates in others what they have inside themselves.
There are people who have genuinely been betrayed. There are people who have suffered real harm at the hands of others, repeatedly, through no construction of their own, and their account of it is simply true. To hear such a person and think knowingly to yourself that the accusation must be a confession is not wisdom. It is cruelty dressed as insight, and it does exactly what was done to them in the first place, which is refusal to believe them.
So learn to tell the difference, and it is not difficult once you know where to look. The one who has truly been harmed usually speaks of it reluctantly. There is grief in it. There is often confusion, and a genuine wish to understand what happened and why. They will frequently examine their own part in it, sometimes falling far too harshly on their own actions. And there is generally an ending to the telling, because they are trying to deal with it, release it, let it go, rather than carry it.
The one who is describing their own inner landscape speaks differently. There is no grief, only grievance. The story arrives complete and rehearsed, they have told it before, it requires nothing from you but agreement. They is never anywhere to go in it except to recognise them as the injured party. And there is no ending, because the story is not being told in order to be released. It is being told because it is load bearing, it is what they are and they tell in a way that says, this is part of me that I carry around with me. Remove it and the structure of the Self comes down with it.
Watch also for one further sign, and it is the clearest of all. Notice how quickly you are recruited. You are being told all of this very early on, about people you have never met, and you are being invited to take a side, before you have any means of judging. Someone else out there is on the other side of the story but you hear only one. You are not being confided in. You are being positioned as an additional support to their story. You are being conditioned as a sympathiser to their victimhood. You are being warned of all they have gone through and you better not do the same.
There is an energy that goes with it, a behaviour that appears in the re-telling. A narrowing of the eyes, an underlying anger that purses the lips, a raised chin, a clasped fist. The emotions are replaying the story inside and the body responds to its new audience.
Sometimes, there is Love still flowing through their story, a dangerous kind of love called hatred, unrequited, cast aside by another that chose a different path because the existing one had become impossible to move forward. Both adulation and viciousness show themselves in the retelling that captures them in the moment as the movie replays in their head. Until they return to you – to study your reaction, your response, your agreement.
What, then, do you do with what you have seen?
Not confrontation. You will not talk anyone out of a structure that is holding them together, and any attempt will simply place you on their embedded list rather more quickly. Not judgement either, because none of this was chosen freely by them. Somewhere behind it there was a real wound, usually early and usually genuine, and everything since has been an attempt to make certain it never happens again. The defence works, which is precisely why it has never been dismantled.
What you do is stay clear-eyed and remain kind. Take what you are told as information about them rather than as fact about the absent. Give trust in measures, according to what is actually demonstrated, rather than all at once or not at all. Notice what is asked of you and what is given back. And decline, gently, to enter the justice court.
Now, the most important part of all of this. So many individuals in the world telling the same story to others and of course to pepetuate it within themselves. Are you one too? Inevitably yes, if you are human living on Planet Earth, then life itself will have created relationship events that present teachings and lessons to all Souls incarnated at this time.
So turn it inward, because that is always where this work concludes. Your Self.
What do you find yourself accusing others of, most often and most quickly? Where are you certain, before any evidence arrives, that you know what someone is really doing? What quality do you detect in other people again and again, in every setting, throughout your life? Consider, honestly, whether you have been describing the reality of the world all this time, or reading aloud from your own map.
The pattern ends only in one place, and it is not in the behaviour of others. It ends the moment a person is willing to see their own hand in what keeps happening to them. Not once – it cannot be said that one single event was the ‘fault’ of the person involved. These are genuine tragedies that require a very different examination by the Self often with experienced assistance.
But patterns, repeated behaviours, relationships that continue to act out the same script again and again. This requires examining self-responsibility, self-worth, self-love to find your own position. This creates moments that are uncomfortable beyond ordinary discomfort, and it is the beginning of Sovereignty, because it returns authorship to where it always belonged.
You are not required to trust everybody. You are required to know which map you are using and recognise the path you are creating and navigating for your Self.
