There exists a quiet realisation settling across the world. Are we any more special than any other time in history?

For all the latest machinery, the networks, the newest materials, all in the language of advancement, we have not moved beyond corruption, plague, famine, pestilence and war. These still remain the constants applied to the same underlying drama.

Technology and modern society are merely the newest labels applied to the oldest patterns. The costumes change. The script remains to tell the same story.

Look at any era and the pattern repeats. Corruption still hollows institutions, whether through feudal patronage, colonial extraction, or the quiet capture of regulators. Plague has not vanished, it has only changed its delivery vehicle. Famine persists less from failed harvests than from failed distribution, manipulated scarcity, conflict and political calculation. War adapts its weapons of destruction in every generation while keeping its essential nature: organised violence over resources, territory, identity or prestige.

What we call modernity is largely a more efficient delivery system for the same afflictions. Instant communication carries knowledge and panic with quicker speed. The same logistics that move food move weapons. Medicine reduces mortality in one direction while creating new fragility in another, through over-reliance, eradication of natural alternatives, resistance, and supply chains and prices controlled by very few hands. The claim of progress is really a selective measurement, longer lives in certain regions, greater material throughput, cleverer tools, while the deeper pathologies continue untouched.

Not everyone wants the particular version of life offered by what is called the West, any more than they want the alternatives offered elsewhere. Cultural and political models are not universal goods to be exported like the identically branded commodities that fill shopping malls and corner shops.

Some societies seek stability by enforcing collective compliance rather than offer individual autonomy, with communal cohesion raised above secular liberalism. Others completely reverse it.

Every attempt to treat one single unified model as the inevitable destination of history has produced resistance, adaptation, or refusal. The assumption that material prosperity or institutional reforms automatically translate into desired ways of living has been tested and found incomplete. People arrange their lives around values that do not appear in any measurable form of growth.

Even the methods of separation, segregation and division do not survive examination. On a global sphere, there is no absolute east or west. These are relative directions, entirely dependent on where the observer chooses to stand.

Conventional usage places Europe at the meridian, so that lands to the right become East, Middle East and further still, Far East. Stand in Tokyo and look toward Europe, and you are facing west. Stand in Cairo and look toward Beijing, and you are facing east. The division is not a feature of the planet. It is a feature of one flat map, drawn by those who placed themselves at its centre.

This is more than semantics. It shows how power shapes perception. Recognising that personal orientation is taught not a fundamental reality, changes the perspective but does not erase real differences of history, faith and practice. It simply refuses to arrange those differences along a single line of advancement with one civilisation at the head of Others.

The implication is sobering rather than despairing. If corruption, disease, scarcity and organised violence have not already been transcended, then the intention has never been to invent a perfected global society. It is to meet the everyday problems with whatever the present offers, while remaining sceptical of any claim that the tools have altered human nature. Technology can ease suffering and can amplify it. Governance can restrain its population or can enable it.

On a global planet, no civilisation holds the permanent power centre. The known history demonstrates this – whilst the hidden history would show us why. Directions are relative, progress is provisional, and the old companions travel with us still, finding new ways to emerge into each new society to test resilience against previous models.

The honest response is neither nostalgia for a golden age nor faith in an inevitable future. It requires a clearer sight of the meaning and purpose of Soul Intention to learn and grow from the infinite lessons that life presents.

The Evolution of Consciousness therefore becomes the ultimate experiment providing the ongoing conditions that have always defined the human experience.
