Who is Living within YOU
You believe your Self to be individual, even unique. The words sit comfortably. They suggests a single, undivided thing, a being whole unto itself, arriving at its own conclusions and moving by its own will.
But ask your Self a harder question. When a thought arrives, whose voice is speaking it?
Consider the government you carry within you. Not the one in the capital buildings, the one you hold in your own beliefs. You queue without being told. You move in one direction if a sign demands it. You adapt your behaviour, lower your voice, fall into line, in certain places. You feel a small tightening within when you see a rule being broken in your presence, even a rule you have never examined, even one you may privately disagree with. You recognise that what has happened is somehow wrong, against the grain, not acceptable.
You have become a walking rule book of statutes, and the remarkable thing is that no officer is required to enforce them. The enforcement has been internalised so completely that you police yourself in an empty room, and then, more tellingly still, you police others. You might tell them how they should be. You explain what should be done and what should not be done, what is right and what is wrong. You may not even know them, never meet them again, but at that moment, you enforce your rules upon them. Listen to yourself the next time you do it and ask your Self who is actually speaking.
Consider the religion that sits inside your head, whether or not you claim one. It determines what you count as sin, as right and wrong, even when you have renamed it. It decides which pleasures carry a shadow behind them. It shapes how you speak to those you consider to have fallen, and how you speak to yourself when you believe you have. A person may leave the building, discard the book, reject the doctrine entirely, and still carry the whole architecture of guilt, reward, purity and judgement intact within them. The furniture remains long after the house is sold.
Consider your parents. They speak to you still, and they do not need to be present, or living, to do so. That voice you call conscience, examine its accent. Whose disappointment do you fear when you consider doing something unconventional? Whose approval are you still reaching toward in your achievements? Many a life has been spent building monuments intended for an audience of one or two people who stopped watching decades ago, or who never watched in the way that you hoped for.
Consider your ancestors, who reach further back and speak more quietly, and are therefore harder to notice. They determine what you consider proper. They set the shape of your celebrations, the timing of your grief, what you eat at certain seasons, what you owe to blood, what may be spoken aloud and what must be carried in silence. They hand you a sense of what is expected of a person like you, and you receive it as though it were simply reality.
And beyond these, the wider circle. Your family, who taught you what love looks like and what it costs. Your friends, who quietly define the range of acceptable opinion that suits them. Your neighbours, whose imagined observation shapes your garden, your car, your children’s behaviour. Your position in society, which tells you which doors you may reasonably approach. Your culture, your nationality, your language, which does not merely express your thoughts but limits which thoughts are easily thinkable at all.
Now, when all of these are counted, decide where the individual is standing amongst them all.
This is not said to diminish you. It is said because the illusion of the self-made mind is the single greatest obstacle to actual Sovereignty. A being who believes their thoughts are their own has no reason to examine them. A being who believes they chose their values will defend those values with the ferocity of ownership, march in the streets, protest against and for, without ever having once inspected the maker’s mark upon them.
You are not a solitary point of consciousness making free decisions in a vacuum. You are a gathering, a meeting place. You are the ground upon which many voices have settled, some invited, most not, and the voice you call is the loudest of them, or the most familiar.
Understand clearly that this is not a fault to be corrected. It is the condition of being incarnated among others. You came here to be shaped, and shaping requires hands other than your own. Much of what has been placed within you is beautiful: kindness learned from a grandmother’s loving actions, courage absorbed from a friend, a love of music that was often played in the background during childhood. To tear all of it out in the name of independence would leave nothing standing, and the one doing the tearing would simply be another inherited impulse, the rebellion that was itself passed down.
The spiritual work is not removal, eradication, burial or cord cutting – it is the recognition in the form of Elucidation – shining light on what lies within.
Sovereignty does not require thinking thoughts that came from nowhere. It means knowing where your thoughts came from – the Source of your actions, decisions, speech and inspiration. It means being able to sit with a conviction and ask honestly: is this mine, or was it given to me, and if it was given, do I still choose to keep it?
Some you will keep, and keeping them consciously transforms them entirely. An inherited value that has been examined and then freely re-chosen is no longer an inheritance, it has become a decision. Some you will set down with gratitude for the protection they once offered a younger self who needed them. And some you will find have been running your life for years on behalf of people who are gone, in service of a world that no longer exists.
The unexamined life is not merely unaware. It is occupied.
So sit quietly, and when the next opinion rises in you, when the next judgement forms about how another person ought to live, pause before you speak it. Trace it backwards. Follow it home. Find out whose house it came from.
Only then will you begin to discover what is actually yours, and only what is actually yours can be freely offered to someone else.
With Love and Blessings ❤️
