In the Light of the day..
It is not clean because you say it is clean. It is clean when I can clearly see that it is clean.
That is the whole of the standard, and it is a standard that almost nothing in this world currently meets. Not because cleanliness is difficult, but because we have quietly agreed, all of us together, to accept the word in place of the sight.
Take a glass of muddy water and hold it up. It is obvious what it is. Now set it down on a table and walk away, and return an hour later. The water at the top is clear. You can see through it. You could photograph it and present it as evidence as to its cleanliness.
But nothing has been cleaned. The mud has simply stopped moving. It has found the bottom and settled there in a fine dark layer, and it will remain exactly where it is until something disturbs it. Time did not remove anything. Time only granted the appearance of removal. The glass now contains precisely what it contained before, arranged more conveniently for the eye. The focus has been drawn towards the water’s appearance and not the contents of the glass.
This is the mechanism by which most problems in a human life, and in a human society, are resolved. Not resolved at all. Merely allowed to settle.
Listen for the language of settling, because it is spoken everywhere and it is remarkably consistent.
I will do it tomorrow. Let me get back to you on that. I will pay you next week. Now is not the right moment. Let us not do this today.
Each of these performs a single function: it removes the matter from the present. It takes something alive and pressing and pushes it forward into a day that has the great advantage of not yet existing. And the quiet hope beneath it, rarely admitted even privately, is not that tomorrow will bring the resolve to act. The hope is that by tomorrow the thing will have stopped being asked. That the person will lose interest. That the matter will settle.
There is an answer to this, and it is not anger. It is precision.
Yes, tomorrow is acceptable, if tomorrow fully satisfies what was asked today. If it does not, there will be a consequence, and the consequence will not be delayed.
Notice what that sentence does. It grants the delay whilst removing the escape. It does not accuse and it does not threaten. It simply refuses to let the request dissolve. Most avoidance depends entirely on the other party being too polite to say the second half.
Now watch this pattern grow, because it does not remain personal for long.
Your family will tell you that everything is fine when it is manifestly not fine. Your friends will change the subject with great skill. Your colleagues will assure you the situation is being handled. Your neighbours will smile over the fence at a household from which raised voices were clearly heard last night. Everyone is settling. Everyone is allowing the mud to sink so that the surface may be presented as clear.
And inside you, the same. The conversation that was never had. The grief that was set aside because there was work to be done. The betrayal that was forgiven aloud and never once digested. None of it left. It settled. It formed a layer. And on any ordinary day the surface of you appears entirely clear, until something knocks the glass.
Then the whole population is addressed in exactly the same voice.
Tomorrow will be better. Things are turning a corner. We will fix this. We will hold a review. We will publish our findings in due course. We will clean up the mess that others made. Election after election, statement after statement, the same promise offered to the same people, and each time the surface is stirred just enough to look like action, and then permitted to settle again before anything reaches the bottom.
But the mud does not leave the glass. It accumulates. It thickens into a deep sediment of unaddressed things, of buried findings, of resignations that resolved nothing, of enquiries that concluded after everyone involved had retired. And a system can carry a great deal of this for a very long time, until the day the layer is thick enough to obstruct, and then everything falters at once. The machinery chokes. Nothing moves. And what rises to the surface then is not new. It was always there. It was simply never removed.
So how do you actually know?
There is a test, and it requires no expertise whatsoever.
Take a clean white cloth, dampen it, and draw it once across a surface that has been declared clean. The surface may look faultless. It may shine. It may have been signed off by someone with a title. But the cloth does not negotiate. The cloth comes away grey, and there is nothing to discuss. The dirt that the eye accepted is now sitting plainly in your hand.
The value of the test is not the cloth. It is that the truth was transferred onto something that could not be argued with. You no longer need to trust the declaration, and the one who made it can no longer defend it. What was invisible became visible, and once visible, it became undeniable.
The Light works in exactly this way, and this is why it is so often resisted by those who speak most warmly of it.
The Light does not politely illuminate what is already on display. It reaches beneath. It stirs. It applies pressure to what has settled and lifts it back into suspension where it can be seen. This is why periods of genuine awakening, whether in one person or in a whole civilisation, do not feel serene. They feel like turbulence. They feel like everything is getting worse. The sediment is rising, the water is clouding, and the untrained response is to say that the Light has caused a problem.
The Light caused nothing. It revealed what was already at the bottom of the glass. The mess was always the state of things. You are only now seeing it accurately, perhaps for the first time.
And here is the part that must be understood, because it is where most people turn back: the water cannot be cleared without first being made cloudy. There is no route from settled mud to clean water that does not pass through the stirring. Anyone offering you a calm and orderly cleansing is offering you another settling.
The summary of all this is straightforward.
We cannot wait for things to settle, because we know what settling actually does. The stain from the old spill is still on the floor beneath the rug. The revelation that was buried under a well-timed distraction is still there, unchanged, patient, waiting for the next time the Light falls across it. Nothing that was hidden has been dealt with. It has only been stored.
The way forward is not to become a person who makes no mistakes. That person does not exist and the pursuit of appearing to be them is the very thing that creates the sediment. The way forward is accountability at the moment of the mistake, whilst it is still small, still surface, still liftable.
Clean as you go. Do not leave the laundry in the basket for a version of yourself who will be more willing. Do not let the weeds grow through the flower bed on the grounds that you will deal with the whole border at the weekend, when you know perfectly well how much easier a seedling is to draw out than a root. Everything must be cleaned and cleared eventually. The only variable is how deep it has gone by the time you reach it, and how much else must be pulled up with it.
Transparency. Accountability. Authenticity. Three words that are used constantly and practised rarely, and all three amount to the same simple thing: allowing what is actually there to be seen, at the time it is there.
And this standard is not for the ordinary person alone.
We have to watch those who hold power, and watch them closely, because they are the ones with the most to gain from settling and the most resources with which to settle it. Crime does not stop at the courtroom door. There are plenty of crooks already inside the building, in the good seats, wearing the correct clothing, speaking in the correct register, and their great advantage is that they have been granted the authority to declare things clean.
Do not take the declaration. Take the cloth. Draw it across the surface, and look at what comes away.
That is how you know.
