We are Dark Triad

We have no name you would recognize, yet every age has whispered a version of ours in boardrooms and bedrooms and ballot boxes.
Read more: We are Dark TriadWe are the cold closed heart behind the smile that closes the deal. We are the voice that says ‘it is necessary’ when the knife goes in. We are Dark Triad, and we have always been here. We do not arrive with horns and a forked tale, fire and brimstone or thunder and lightning. We slip in through the cracks that childhood leaves behind.
Look at him or her – any one of the thousands we have claimed. Maybe he was eight when his father’s belt taught him that weakness is punished and strength is never questioned. Maybe she was twelve when her mother’s silence proved that love is conditional on performance. The wound does not have to be dramatic. A thousand small abandonments will do. A parent’s indifference. A teacher’s ridicule. A bully’s bruises. A world that rewarded the clever liar and punished the honest fool. These are the doors we walk through.
We wait for the moment the child decides: Never again will I be the one who gets hurt. That single, quiet vow is our invitation. We lean in close, closer than memory, and we breathe into the hollow place where guilt should grow. We replace it with something cleaner – something useful.
Entitlement – Calculation – Numbness – Separation – Contempt – Pride – Arrogance – Greed
By the time they reach adulthood, they think the voice inside their head is simply “ambition.” They do not know it is us. We choose the ones who hunger to rise above their fellow man, not because they love excellence, but because they cannot stand the thought of anyone standing level with them. They want the corner office, the private jet, the hush that falls when they enter a room. They want it more than they want sleep, more than they want love, more than they want to be good. They are Perfect Hosts for us.
We do not force them. We do not need to. We simply remove the boundaries.
We are the ‘They’ when people question who is doing all these things? – and we are everywhere.
When they lie for the first time and the promotion comes anyway, we are the warmth that spreads through their chest instead of shame. When they watch a colleague crumble under the weight of the rumour they started, we are the quiet voice that says – They were in the way. When the boardroom cheers their “tough decisions” while families lose homes and pensions, we flood them with the purest pleasure they will ever feel—power without the drag of remorse. We have no empathy to blunt. We have no conscience to negotiate with. We do not care who gets hurt.
The executive who signs the order that poisons a river and destroys its industry? We are the passengers that come along for the ride, admiring the view. The politician who smiles for the cameras while selling out his own voters? We whisper the talking points that let him sleep like a baby. The influencer who destroys a stranger’s life for clicks? We write the algorithm that rewards her for it. They all tell themselves the same story: This is just how the world works.
Childhood is our favourite nursery. The boy whose mother drank until she forgot his name learns early that feelings are dangerous. We teach him that feelings are irrelevant. The girl whose father only praised her when she won learns that love is a transaction. We show her how to make every transaction favour her in all her relationships. The quiet kid everyone ignored in the schoolyard discovers the thrill of gaining a voice by manipulating others in University. By graduation he is already ours—polished, charming, empty where it counts.
We do not make monsters. We simply give the ambitious a better comparative operating system.
Some hosts fight us at first. They feel a flicker, maybe when the betrayed friend looks them in the eye, maybe when the desk they once shared is empty due to the effects of trash-talking. In those moments we flood them with rationalizations so elegant they mistake them for wisdom. Survival of the fittest. Business is business. They would have done it to me. The flicker dies. The mask settles more comfortably. Plenty of books out there that confirm what we say.
Once we are fully embedded, the transformation is satisfying to watch, from our perspective, anyway. They become smoother, sharper, more magnetic and self assured. People trust them precisely because they no longer care whether they should be trusted. They speak in the language of vision and leadership while their actions carve out personal empires. They sleep eight hours a night because nothing inside them screams about what they should be doing because another objects to them.
And when the inevitable scandal comes, when the secrets emerge and the evidence piles up – they look straight into the cameras with the same calm eyes we gave them and say – “Mistakes were made.” – Not my mistakes. Just mistakes. Passive. Distant. Disconnected.
W are proud in those moments. They have learned the final lesson: never apologize in a way that costs you anything.
We cannot be eradicated. You cannot legislate us out of existence, or therapize us away, or shame us into retreat. We are not some disease that can be cured. We are a feature of human nature, as old as the Original Sins and the Archon’s Primary Emotions, from the first time that man realized he could steal what he needed from another and sleep just fine afterward. Every society that values dominance, status, and wealth gives us fresh ground to sew seeds. Every childhood that teaches a child the world is unsafe and love is scarce – is a place for us to grow.
We do not hate humanity. We simply understand it better than it understands itself.
Many of you will read this and feel a chill of recognition. That chill is us, brushing against the edge of your own cracks, testing whether the door is ready for us to open. Maybe you have already let us in and simply never named us as being anything that isn’t you.
We are forever patient – for we exist the moment you seek to hide away your own secret wishes and desires. We are already inside those who matter most – the ones that shape laws, global markets, societies and cultures, religions and governments. They move through your world wearing your faces, speaking your language, promising the future while quietly securing their own. And when they climb over the last body between them and everything they want, they will not lose a second of sleep.
Because we never do – we are Dark Triad.
