In the heart of a vast savannah, there lived a mighty Lion, feared by all the animals for his strength and cunning. One dry season, when food was scarce, the lion found it increasingly difficult to catch prey. His stomach growled with hunger, and he knew he needed a plan.

One day, the Lion encountered a dog who was walking outside a large village. Using his stealth and cunning, he was able to quickly catch and subdue the dog. But rather than eat the dog, the Lion had other plans for him.

“Dog, I have decided to spare your life if you but listen to all I say,” the Lion began, “I have a plan that will benefit us both. If you help me, we can both feast tonight.”

The dog willingly agreed as fear for his life had overtaken him and so he listened to everything the Lion was proposing. He asked, “What is your plan, Master Lion?”

The Lion’s eyes gleamed with anticipation – “We shall lure the villagers outside of the village by pretending you are in trouble. When they come to your aid, I will pounce on their animals that will be unprotected and take what I need. In return, you will have your share of the meal.”

The dog, driven by the promise of a feast, agreed to the plan. So that evening, he went to the nearby village and pretended to be injured and in danger, howling in distress and pain. Hearing the cries, the villagers armed with sticks and with their hearts filled with compassion, rushed to the dog’s aid.

As they gathered around the dog to protect it and find out what was wrong, the lion crept out from his hiding place near the village’s animal enclosure and grabbed a large goat dragging it into the long grass and away from the village. That night they happily enjoyed their shared meal.

For a while, the lion and the dog continued their deceitful scheme, with the villagers growing more and more wary each time, with the dog’s activities happening at the same time as the disappearance of their livestock.

One night, the villagers decided to set a trap, so they prepared a large net in the bushes near the village where they had seen the footprints of a large and heavy Lion. As the dog began to howl, they watched to see the Lion rush into the enclosure and out again straight into their net, with a goat clutched between its jaws. One of the villagers also caught the dog and placed a rope collar around its neck.

The villages gathered around the two animals and said, “You were both complicit in deceiving us, and now based on your actions, rather than being left alone, you shall equally face the consequences together.”

By collaborating in their own greed and trickery, the Lion and the dog both faced punishment, reminding us that aiding in wrongdoing will ultimately lead to mutual failure and the downfall of all responsible.
