For so it had come about, as indeed many others might have foreseen had not terror and fear of disaster blinded their minds. These germs of disease have taken toll of humanity since the beginning of things—taken toll of our prehuman ancestors since life began here.

But by virtue of this natural selection of our kind we have developed resisting power; so no germs do we succumb to without a struggle, and to many—those that cause illness and disease for instance—our living frames have become altogether immune.

But to those who know not living bacteria, directly these new invaders arrived, to all that fed and drunk of our water, and breathed our air, our microscopic allies began to work their overthrow. It was inevitable. By the toll of a billion deaths, we have earned our birthright of the earth, and it is our domain against all new comers; no matter the strength of powers against us.

For neither do we live nor die, in vain.
